What separates good art from bad art? There are art pieces that certainly look cool or music that sounds bumpin, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good. For a form of art to be considered good, there must be a concept, idea, meaning underneath the tangible material.

There have been so many catchy, hit songs over the century: a song that is popular a month ago, is soon forgotten. However, The great songs from artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Nirvana remain popular since their songs contain an interpretative meaning behind the song.

In this youtube clip, two musicians create a typical pop song that one would hear on the radio in less then 8 hours. The video puts popular artists like Miley Cyrus, Katie Perry, Kesha--who don’t write their own songs--to shame by proving that only computer skills, not talent is necessary to make a hit song. These “ artists” songs are usually written by other full-time musicians. However, the public will devour the mindless bass-beats for the next month. Thus, stealing the spotlight from truly innovative musician.

This satirical video contains similarities to the film Exit Through the Gift Shop where street artist Bansky documents the success of a dimwitted-copy-cat street artist, Thierry Guetta. Bansky creates the similar satirical film after Thierry sells millions of dollars with of art that was created by a team of artists under his direction. The public found more meaning in Thierry’s work than he did. Both examples demonstrate the public’s ignorance towards true artistic meaning. However, time is the best deceiver of good art and bad art.
